ROCKVILLE ART LEAGUE, SEPTEMBER 2008 Greetings, Hopefully, you have all had a wonderful and art filled summer. The Rockville Art League is back from its summer break and this promises to be an exciting year. I want to thank Peter Roman for taking on the job as our new newsletter editor. Our newsletter is an essential part of our organization and we really appreciate Peter volunteering to keep it going. Our first meeting will be on Sept 4th. Liliane Blom and Mara Odette have arranged to have Claudia Rousseau, art critic, do a critique for our members. We will be serving wine and cheese to make it a more social evening. Hopefully, you all received the information flyer that went out in the mail. Each member may bring in 3 pieces of work for Dr. Rousseau to critique. She will do three people at a time in a fun friendly manner. Even if you don’t want to participate in the critique come and enjoy the evening with your fellow artists. Liliane has planned some other interesting meetings for us. In October, ceramic artist, Novi Trump will be doing a hands on demonstration. We are also hoping to have a water media demonstration at a future meeting. If you have any suggestions for programs please let Liliane or me know. Our winter juried membership show is scheduled for December. This year we are planning to have postcards and posters featuring members work. We have continuing show opportunities for our members. We need more artists to sign up to show their work in the Rockville Mayor’s office and City Hall. This is a great opportunity to have your work shown. If you are interested please contact Diane Jeang, continuing shows coordinator, and she can put you on the schedule. Please consider volunteering to help RAL this year. We always need volunteers for the two juried shows and the student show in March. Volunteers are also need to help with the telephone committee and hospitality. I am starting my second year as president of the Rockville Art League. I have found it to be very rewarding and have met many fascinating and delightful people . I will not be able to continue as President after this year. The position of Vice /President/President/elect has been vacant for a year. We will need someone to take over the role of President beginning Sept 2009. Please speak to me if you are interested. RAL’s membership, has been declining the past few years. Please spread the word about us. If you know someone who might be interested in joining please invite them to attend one of our meetings. Some sad news. One of our long term members Lou Hodes, passed away in July. Lou had a Ph.D, from MIT, and worked at NIH as a mathematician. He was a brilliant and charismatic man who changed the course of chemistry and made steps in artificial intelligence. We will remember him for his delicate pastel portraits and for the many awards he won in our shows. We will miss Lou and send our condolences to his family and wife Sue. Hope to see many of you at our September 4th meeting.
