www.rockvilleartleague.org Vol. IX No. 9 May 2008 SHOW AGREEMENT - CLICK HERENEXT MEETING: May 1 at 7:30 p.m. at Glenview Mansion. Gallery walk-through with juror Roberta Staat. MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT SUSAN SCHELLBERG Greetings Spring is here which means RAL’s spring membership show is right around the corner. Drop off date for the show is Wednesday, April 30 from 12 noon to 2pm and from 5 to 7pm. Judging will be Thursday May 1st and we will have a walk through with the judge on May 1st at 7:30pm. The Rockville Art League is extremely fortunate to have the Glenview Mansion as a venue for our two membership shows. It is a beautiful facility and the arts staff always hangs a great show for us. We are also very privileged to have the use of the two conference rooms for members to have solo shows. If you have won a Best in Show, 1st, 2nd or third place award in any category you are eligible to have a solo show in one or both of the conference rooms. This is a great way to get your work shown. We do need volunteer help for the spring membership show. Marian Mackerer, our show coordinator, is recruiting volunteers to help. Please contact her if you can give even a little bit of time. Sandra Levine, our hospitality chairperson, is going to need help with refreshments at the opening on May 4th. Sandra has been doing a terrific job with refreshments this year but she really will need help at the opening. Remember RAL is an all-volunteer group and we depend on help from our members. Jodi Walsh led a very dynamic and informative discussion at our April meeting. Jodi has 30 years of experience marketing her own work and that of other artists. She has created a 12-step program called the "Art of Doing Business". It was packed with practical suggestions for getting your art shown and marketing it. We only had a small turnout for the meeting but the questions and creative ideas flowed. Jodi also provided an excellent and highly useful handout. Lastly, starting in September, we are going to need a NEW NEWSLETTER EDITOR. I am sure all of you will agree with me that Rebecca Warring has been an outstanding newsletter editor along with being an outstanding artist. Rebecca has been our newsletter editor for the past two years and now needs to turn the job over to someone else. I can’t stress how important this board position is to RALs ability to function and communicate with our members. All you need is Microsoft word and access to the Internet. Rebecca says that it takes her about two to three hours a month. This is a job that can be done from home and totally through e-mail. Rebecca will be happy to work with the new person to get them started. PLEASE CONSIDER HELPING US OUT. PLEASE SEND ME AND/OR REBECCA AN E-MAIL IF YOU ARE INTERESTED. You can also call me at 301-984-7211. We also still need someone to take the position of 2nd Vice President/President elect. All of our board members have the opportunity to put two pieces of their artwork in the annual board members show in June. See you all at the May1st meeting and walk through of the spring show. Susan Schellberg, President QUOTE OF THE MONTH
FROM REBECCA WARING – Newsletter Editor Next month will be my last as editor of the Rockville Art League Newsletter. I moved to Baltimore last year and this makes it difficult for me to participate in the League’s activities. Also family obligations are making it hard for me to continue to volunteer. But be not afraid! It is a fun job!! I can get you set up so it will take a minimum of time – a few hours a month. All you need are email and Microsoft Word. I get most of the ‘calls for artists’ from a list that is put out by the Montgomery County Arts and Humanities Council – you just sign up. Otherwise the various board members send you their contributions and you just type it up and send it along to our Webmaster, Noble. There is certainly room for you to add your own creative touches if you feel so inclined. Also, you get to participate in the board members’ show each year. Please email me or Susan if you can step up to the plate. Board positions are for a 2-year period. It is crucial that we fill this position if members want to continue to receive the newsletter.
